The property at Hohlstrasse 176, Zurich, has been used as storage space for Timon Roth since 3 August 2025. Since this date, he has been using around 50 m² of screed space as temporary storage.
10,000 books
Timon Roth has been collecting books and other items found on the street for several years. Due to a lack of space in his own flat, Timon Roth began selling books via Ricardo around two and a half years ago. In winter, he came up with the idea of creating his own website for the sale (buch-secondhand.ch).
By moving into the warehouse at Hohlstrasse 176 , buch-secondhand.ch was able to create space in the flat again and store and catalogue around 10,000 books properly. In addition to books, other second-hand goods such as clothes, household items, toys and antiques are also stored. A further online portal (secondchanche.ch) is planned for these. Until further notice, sales will mainly take place via Ricardo (https://www.ricardo.ch/de/shop/loosebone/offers/ and https://www.ricardo.ch/de/shop/dialout/offers/).
For Timon Roth, the second-hand business is a balance to his regular job as a programmer. Originally, it all started with evening walks, during which found items were picked up time and again. This passion for collecting developed into a sideline in which the found objects are sold on.
He enjoys passing things on to people who can use them. The resulting contacts enrich his otherwise rather isolated home office life as a programmer.
Selling is not done with the aim of getting rich, but as a sideline. He charges CHF 5 for most items, in rare cases CHF 10. He is also interested in bringing a little order into the world. Time and again, things are sold that he never thought anyone would need.
Timon Roth is convinced that every thing has a soul and a place in the universe and tells a story. So the work here is also on a metaphysical level.
The building at Hohlstrasse 176 has a special charm for Timon Roth. He has known it since childhood, as he lived in District 4 for a long time, attended school there and lived there with his family. The Kummler & Matter building is an integral part of the neighbourhood.
