The former administration building at Mollstrasse 1, formerly the headquarters of the GDR news agency and later Zalando headquarters, is now being successfully utilised by Projekt Interim. Around 15,000 m² of versatile space has been created for creative professionals, companies and events. The temporary use promotes Berlin’s creative scene and shows how urban vacancies can be utilised in a meaningful and lively way.
New life on nine floors
The striking high-rise building at Mollstrasse 1 is located in the immediate vicinity of Alexanderplatz and originally served as the headquarters of the GDR news agency ADN from 1971 to 1990. In 2013, Zalando took over the building and used it as its headquarters before the company moved to a newly built campus in Berlin-Friedrichshain in 2018.
Today, the 15,000 m² building is being revitalised in a variety of ways over nine floors as part of a temporary use. Projekt Interim has created flexible spaces for creatives, start-ups and companies – including studios, offices, band rooms and event spaces. The spaces are available at favourable conditions and offer room for innovative ideas and projects.
This temporary use is an impressive example of how vacant buildings can be put to good temporary use and the local creative scene promoted at the same time.
